I.love.reading is a magazine for children from age 4 onwards. This magazine seeks to develop the joy of reading in children and to complement their learning through a series of well-thought-out stories and activities. It centres around three main characters: a brother and sister named Stan and Stella and Lulu, a ‘magical’ monkey. Children will be eager to follow the adventures of these three lively characters in each new issue.
The stories and activities in each issue are based around particular themes. The theme of the first issue is ‘Jungle Animals’, and subsequent themes for Volume 1 include ‘Farm Animals’, ‘Earth Day’, ‘Travel’, ‘International Friendship’ and ‘Storyland’. These themes complement some of the stories in the STELLAR programme used in Primary 1 and 2.
The stories seek to draw children into the lives of the relatable and readily identifiable characters, fostering a natural desire to read on and find out what happens next. The level of reading is age-appropriate and seeks to reinforce reading fluency. Questions are embedded within the stories to help children develop both critical thinking skills and empathy towards others, while the colourful illustrations that accompany the text are attractive and lively and will make reading a positive and joyful experience for young children.
Activities like crossword puzzles, word searches, spot the difference challenges, mazes and simple crafts are fun ways to develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and word recognition skills, as well as to help with vocabulary building.
Additionally, a teacher/parent resource pack is included with each issue. This resource pack includes suggestions for creative drama as well as other classroom activities to enhance the children’s learning experience as studies show that they learn best through active participation. Worksheets (with answers) are also included to help develop comprehension, grammar and phonics skills – establishing a strong reading foundation from an early age.
